Connecting with our Community

Wednesday Night Bible Study

The WNBS ministry is a very important component to how we connect with both Central City and Windber communities. We send out 2 big 15 passenger vans, 3-5 personal vehicles and sometimes a school bus to these communities picking up our kiddos on Wednesday Nights. The night consists of singing, a Bible story, learning games and a meal. The youth enjoy a meal, whole group game and a lesson by the youth pastor. If you need transportation, please contact Sharon.

Vacation Bible School

Each year in May we dive into the community and connect with families who may be interested in a fun week at VBS. As a result, the Lord has blessed us with busing in close to 100 children each day from Central City and Windber. The children learn a Bible story, memorize scripture, make a craft, complete workbooks pertaining to the VBS theme, play, sing, dance, and fellowship during the lunch we provide each day. This memorable week is truly a community effort and a way in which we establish new friendships that we continue to build on throughout the upcoming year.

Women's Fellowship

This group of women takes the church's mission statement to heart. Loving God and people and changing the world through one love offering and fundraiser at a time! These ladies organize the funeral meals at the church, provide IU8 Christmas stockings each year, provide the necessary funds to purchase the Daily Bread for the church, bless shuts-ins with love gifts, and give funds to the New Day in Windber, youth mission trips and backpacks/school supplies for our kiddos. This is just to name a few of their ministries. They meet 1 time a month at Carlyn's Restaurant in Windber to discuss upcoming opportunities and enjoy fellowship! If you are interested in making a difference to the community through this ministry, please connect with Diane.

Men's Fellowship

This group of men have a variety of different ministries they focus on helping the church community, or bringing in the community to teach about God's powerful word. When there is a need within the church body, they connect with one another and get the job done using the talents God has gifted them with. A new ministry is in-the-works teaching children/youth of various ages the importance of the trades like wood shop in conjunction with teaching a Biblical lesson. If you are interested in either of these ministries, please connect with Jeff.

Stadium Terrace Outreach

Relationships are incredibly important to the folks at Berkey Church and building them with the families and children at Stadium Terrace has been a focus of ours for many years. On Tuesdays during the spring, summer and fall, Berkey volunteers meet with our friends in this community to serve dinner, teach a Bible story, sing a few songs, play games, read books with the children, and connect with their parents. The relationships we have developed through this outreach have been such a blessing to our church. If you are interested in this particular ministry, contact Jason.

Kentucky Mission Trips

Our mission at Berkey Church is to "Love God, Love People, Make Disciples and Change the World." With this in mind, our relationship with the folks in the community of Lost Creek, Kentucky is a way in which we try to live out our church mission. For 22 years, folks at Berkey have traveled to Kentucky to develop and strengthen relationships with the children and adults in the hollers of this community while walking alongside the pastor and his family at Caney Creek Mennonite Church. From teaching VBS at Caney Creek to connecting with folks at the Jackson Community Center to Christmas Caroling to our friends in the holler, we value these opportunities to give to the community we hold so dear in our hearts.

New Day

(Downtown/Windber)

A number of years ago the folks at Berkey Church organized and implemented a Kids Club Ministry in downtown Johnstown. Connecting with the communities downtown is just as important to us as connecting with our local community. We are privileged to be allowed to come alongside New Day as  Berkey ministers at both locations on Tuesday afternoons. Youth, pastors, and a variety of other volunteers visit the New Day after school program downtown in Kernville providing them with homework help and a Bible lesson, as well as developing relationships with the children at this wonderful facility. In addition to downtown, we visit the New Day drop in center in Windber to further connect with our local youth outside of church walls.  If you are interested in volunteering in this capacity, connect with Jason or Sharon.

Soup & Salad Sundays

We believe that through offering fellowship opportunities like Soup and Salad Sundays each month (except the summer months), we are able to develop a closer community within the church. The connections made through conversation and a delicious bowl of soup have enabled us to grow as a church body, connect with others in our community that may be visiting our church for the first time, and provide a way for us to fundraise for various ministries like the Bus Ministry, children going to camp, and so on. Please look for these events on our News & Events page.
